There are 2 major type of Vampiric item:
Option 1: Steal HP/MP for x% of damage:
This type of option is the one that actually have the hp/mp stealing effect. However, there are limits of how much HP you can steal per hit on one target.
Limit 1: Character level divided by 10.
This limit can be extended by the option 2 (Max HP/MP steal per hit + x)
Limit 2: 5% of maximum HP for your character. This limit cannot be extended.
The maximum amount of HP/MP you steal is the smaller of the two limited mentioned.
Option 2: Max HP/MP Steal per Hit + x
This type of option DOES NOT actually steal hp/mp. It adds to the limit 1 to become the maximum amount of HP/MP that you can steal.
Example:
1. Char level = 120, Char Max HP = 3000, HP steal = 5%, Damage dealt = 2000, Target = 1 monster.
HP steal 5% effect : 2000 x 0.05 = 100
Limit 1 : 120/10 = HP 12
Limit 2 : 3000 x 0.05 = HP 150
Lower of limit 1 and 2 = HP 12
Net Effect : HP 12 x 1 absorb
5% of HP absorb for 2000 damage is 100 HP, but because of limit 1, the maximum amount of HP steal is 120/10 = 12 HP. So without adding option 2, high % of HP/MP absorption is almost meaningless.
2. Char level = 120, Char Max HP = 3000, HP absorb = 5%, Max HP steal per hit + 50, Damage dealt = 2000, Target = 1 monster.
HP steal 5%` : 2000 x 0.05 = 100
Limit 1 : 120/10 = HP 12
Limit 2 : 3000 x 0.05 = HP 150
HP steal limit+50 : Limit 1 extended to 12+50 = HP 62
Lower of limit 1 and 2 = HP 62
Net Effect : HP 62 x 1 absorb
The limit for HP steal in this case is now 12 + 50 = 62. So the added option 2 adds a huge amount of HP steal.
3. Char level = 120, Char Max HP = 3000, HP absorb = 5%, Max HP/MP steal per hit + 50, Damage dealt = 2000 per monster, Target = 5 monsters.
HP steal 5%` : 2000 x 0.05 = 100
Limit 1 : 120/10 = HP 12
Limit 2 : 3000 x 0.05 = HP 150
HP steal limit+50 : Limit 1 extended to 12+50 = HP 62
Lower of limit 1 and 2 = HP 62
Net Effect : HP 62 x 5 = HP 310 absorb
The effect of HP steal increase as the number of target monsters increases. However, the limits still apply on each monsters.
4. Char level = 120, Char Max HP = 2000, HP absorb = 10%, Increase HP absorption limit + 120, Damage dealt = 2000, Target = 1 monster
HP steal 5%` : 2000 x 0.10 = 200
Limit 1 : 120/10 = HP 12
Limit 2 : 2000 x 0.05 = HP 100
HP steal limit+120 : Limit 1 extended to 12+120 = HP 132
Lower of limit 1 and 2 = HP 100
Net Effect : HP 100 absorb
This example shows how the maximum HP affects the limit of HP absorption. This shows that having high maximum HP also is important for optimum HP steal.
Conclusion:
The two vampiric options (steal HP/MP x% of damage and Max HP/MP Steal per hit + x ) have to work hand in hand in order for effective HP/MP absorption.
List of item with option “Steal HP/MP x% of damage”
- Life/Mana absorption ring
- Force absorption ring
- Extortion ring
- Life/Mana absorp bracelet
- Extortion bracelet
- Vampiric gloves from professional crafting
- Force core upgrade in slotted item (lvl 2 random option, need 2 force cores)
List of item with option “Max HP/MP Steal per hit + x”
- Vampiric Amulet
- Vampiric Earring
- Vampiric helmet and boots from professional crafting
- Force core upgrade in slotted item (lvl 2 random option, need 2 force cores)
For now, one would wear just one x% force absorption ring and a vampiric amulet in grinding to save HP and MP potion (if you configure your items correctly, you can even grind without using potion). In some high level dungeon, vampiric item can even save your life.
It is not hard to note that the common limiter in HP/MP steal is usually limit 1 (char lvl). If you do decent damage on monsters, 4% of HP/MP absorption ring is normally enough. However, without the “Max HP/MP steal per hit +x ” in vampiric amulet or other vampiric item, the maximum amount of HP/MP absorb is very little.
